Important Update Regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
On August 24, 2026, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued Broadcast Message 2608-02, further clarifying that CPT must be an integral and required part of an established curriculum that applies to all students (domestic and international) participating in the same program.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 international students to participate in paid or unpaid off-campus academic internships and practicums during their degree program. The purpose of CPT is academic, not solely for employment, and the internship or practicum must be an integral part of the student’s degree program.
On August 24, 2026, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued Broadcast Message 2608-02, underscoring that CPT must be an integral and required part of an established curriculum that applies to all students (domestic and international) participating in the same program. CPT based on an elective course that is not required for every student in the program does not meet these requirements.
In accordance with this guidance, effective August 24, CPT requests will only be authorized when practical training is a degree requirement for graduation. OIS will work with students and academic departments to provide additional information regarding the required documentation confirming that a proposed training meets applicable regulatory and university requirements. Approval of requests for CPT authorization may be delayed during this period.
Fall 2026 CPT authorizations issued by OIS before August 24 will not be rescinded. OIS will provide additional guidance to these students and departments.
