Research Abroad
F-1 and J-1 international students who wish to travel abroad to conduct research for their academic program must first consult with and get approval from their academic department. The expected duration of their time abroad should be determined prior to their departure from the U.S.
In addition, graduate students should discuss any possible changes to university funding (i.e. TA/RAship) with the USC Graduate School as it could be affected while they are abroad.
Students who will conduct research abroad in their final semester should also consult with the Office of International Services (OIS) on how this could impact their Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) eligibility since students are required to be in the U.S. at the time they file their OPT application with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Once a student receives approval from their academic department to conduct research abroad, they must complete the Independent Student Travel Registration Form in the Student Travel Abroad portal. Questions regarding this form can be directed to stabroad@usc.edu
To be in compliance with immigration regulations, OIS must report scheduled travel related to research abroad to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security via SEVIS. Students who will be out of the country for the majority and/or entire semester for research purposes will be provided additional information in the Student Travel Abroad portal including a link to the “OIS Research/Study Abroad Request” form. Once OIS receives the completed form from the student, their SEVIS record will be updated to reflect that they have been approved to conduct research abroad for the upcoming semester. This will help to ensure a smooth re-entry to the U.S. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have valid re-entry documents to facilitate their return to the U.S.
Study Abroad
F-1 and J-1 international students can participate in a USC study abroad program and maintain their immigration status. Students who are interested in studying abroad must meet the following requirements:
- Maintained F-1/J-1 student status for at least one full academic term prior to the semester in which they will study abroad
- Be enrolled full-time at USC in the semester that the student will study abroad
- Have a valid passport, F-1/J-1 visa and I-20/DS-2019 with valid travel signature to return to the U.S. after the study abroad program ends.
Students considering studying abroad must meet with an OIS advisor before finalizing travel plans. To meet with an advisor, please contact OIS.
